Lift the sheets on your shingles- The Underlayment

If you are planning on having a roof installed, there are many factors to consider. The Shingles, Installers, Warranty, Price.... but there is one vital part of your roof that is often overlooked - the Underlayment.

Underlayment is the material that is installed under your shingles. In Florida, there are varying materials and methods used by contractors. Florida building codes require a secondary water barrier be installed on all reroofs. What does this mean? Besides one layer of underlayment, an additional water barrier must be installed.

To accomplish this, some roofers install two layers of 15# felt paper. 15# is the thinnest and cheapest felt material available.

Others use 30# felt paper along with 4" strips of water barrier. the strips are only installed along the joints of the felt.

Shingle Masters uses WIP. WIP stands for Water and Ice Protection. What is it? WIP is a rubberized membrane that is superthick and adheres to the sheathing(wood decking) on your roof. The material is thicker than 30# felt and has an asphalt surface. Instead of a paper base like felt, the rubber material lasts longer and provides better protection for your home. WIP is so strong that it is accepted as a secondary water barrier by itself. This means your roof has a material that is at least double the protection of felt. Also, Insurers may only accept a rubber underlayment material like WIP to earn an insurance discount as a secondary water barrier. Also, beacuse WIP sticks to your sheathing, the material requires less nails. This means your home has less nail penetrations, and less chances for a leak in the future.

Installing WIP on every home is just one of the reasons our roofs stand out from our competitors. It is also another reason we are able to offer a Lifetime Workmanship Warranty on every roof we install.
